Record machine identity carefully
- Manufacturer, model, serial-number range, and approximate year.
- Engine, pump, transmission, or attachment identification separately.
- Component name and exact mounting location.
- Any evidence the machine was repowered or modified.
- Part numbers stamped on the component or listed in the manual.
Measure the joint, not only the old gasket
A used gasket can shrink, stretch, tear, or remain compressed. When access is safe and the equipment is fully isolated, compare the old gasket to the clean mating surface. Record hole diameters, center distances, passages, outside envelope, and any location where the gasket must not obstruct flow.
Service conditions to document
List the actual fluid or gas, temperature range, pressure or vacuum, outdoor exposure, vibration, flange material, surface condition, bolt pattern, and applicable code or certification. Material family descriptions are not engineering approval.
Send the strongest source available
- Original service drawing or dimensioned CAD file.
- Clean flatbed scan of the complete old gasket.
- Square overhead photo with verified scale.
- Tracing plus multiple direct measurements.
Use more than one source when possible. The production proof is the final geometry check before cutting.
